Celebrate and Read This November!

There are so many fun, special days to celebrate in November.  Below you will find books that match with Día de Los Muertos! (November 1st), World Kindness Day! (November 13th), Thanksgiving! (November 27th), and more!  We hope that every day in November brings you fun and endless pages of reading fun!

 

Día de Los Muertos by Hannah Eliot (Picture Book, Grades PreK-2)

November 1st is Día de Los Muertos!  The Day of the Dead originates from Mexico and is celebrated to welcome home the souls of relatives for a brief visit.  You can learn more about this celebration by reading about Día de Los Muertos or talking to friends who may celebrate this holiday.

 

Melvin Beederman: The Curse of the Bologna Sandwich by Greg Trine (Fiction, Grades 2-5)

November 3rd is National Sandwich Day!  Lettuce discuss this delicious day!  Oh the wonderful sandwiches you can imagine and make; a PB&J with banana and marshmallow fluff or a meatball sub with all the gooey cheese!  Let your imagination run wild and make a sandwich with a friend and settle down with a great book.

 

Daniel Goes To The Playground by Becky Friedman (Picture book, Grades PreK-2)

November 2nd is National Play Outside Day!  Instead of being inside all day, go outside and play with your friends!  There are so many cool and fun activities you can do outside.  You can ride a bike, draw on the sidewalk with chalk, and even play hide and seek!

 

Max Meow 2: Donuts and Danger by John Gallagher (Graphic Novel, Grades 2-5)

November 5th is National Donut Day!  A day dedicated to donuts?  How exciting!  Learn how to make yummy donuts and share them with a friend. Or read a book about donuts and how even a delicious donut can go on an action packed adventure.

 

Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew: Cupcake Chaos by Carolyn Keene (Fiction, Grades 1-4)

November 10th is National Vanilla Cupcake Day!  Did you know that cupcakes were originally baked in small heavy pottery pots?  Or that the earliest recipes for cupcakes dates all the way back to 1828?  Cupcakes have a long history and what batter way to celebrate them than by having a cupcake decorating contest!  Grab your favorite cupcake recipe and create your own cupcakes and make fun designs.

 

Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller (Picture book, Grades PreK-1)

November 13th is World Kindness Day!  Spend the day spreading kindness to one another.  It is well known that when someone acts kind to another, they are more likely to be kind as well.  Take the time to be kind and read about different ways you can spread kindness.

 

The Princess and The Pea by Harriet Ziefert (Beginning Readers, Grades 1-3)

November 18th is National Princess Day!  Dress up as your favorite princess and have a princess party with your friends!  Read fairy tales about princesses, watch movies with princesses, or even pretend to run your own kingdom.  The possibilities are endless!

 

Froggy Bakes a Cake by Jonathan London (Picture book, Grades PreK-3)

November 26th is National Cake Day!  Life’s batter with cake!  Cake is a classic dessert that deserves to be celebrated!  Create your own cake and decorate it with endless topping!  There are so many great books out there with cake ideas.  Take the time to read one and make the best cake ever!

 

Thanksgiving Day by Dianne M. MacMillan (Nonfiction, Grades 4-6) 

November 27th is Thanksgiving!  This is the time when we gather with family and friends and give thanks for many reasons.  The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621, where pilgrims and Native American Wampanoag people gathered together and shared a feast.  To learn more about the first Thanksgiving, pick up a book about Thanksgiving and read about the origins of Thanksgiving and why we celebrate it each year.

 

The Giving Day: A Cubby Hill Tale by Cori Doerrfeld (Picture book, Grades PreK-2)

November 28th is National Day of Giving!  This day is to remind us to give back to our community.  There are many different ways you can give back, whether it is donating clothing, having a food drive, or even visiting a soup kitchen and volunteering.  Giving back is an amazing thing to do and if you are unsure how to give back, talk to your parents or teachers and they can help.  Maybe even taking out a book on giving back can be your first step.
