Celebrate and Read This December!

There are so many fun, special days to celebrate in December.  Below you will find books that match with Cheetah Day! (December 4th), Cocoa Day! (December 13th), Winter Solstice (December 21st), and more!  We hope that every day in December brings you fun and endless pages of reading fun!

 

 

Cheetahs by Ann O. Squire (Nonfiction, Grades 2-4)

December 4th is National Cheetah Day! This day is dedicated to raising awareness for these big cats.  Cheetahs are unfortunately facing extinction, but there are so many great ways you can help spread awareness!  You can read about cheetah’s, create art with cheetahs to show how awesome they are, or even visit a sanctuary and meet a cheetah!

 

 

How to Catch a Gingerbread Man by Adam Wallace (Picture book, Grades K-4)

December 12th is Gingerbread House Day! A house made of gingerbread?  How yummy!  Spend the day creating gingerbread houses with friends and family and see who can add the most decorations with candy and icing! 

 

Hot Cocoa Hearts by Suzanne Nelson (Fiction, Grades 4-7)

December 13th is National Cocoa Day!  Who doesn’t love a cup of warm chocolate?  I sure do!  Curl up near the fireplace, read your favorite books, and enjoy a nice warm mug of hot cocoa.  This day is perfect for chocolate lovers and those who love warm beverages.

 

By the Hanukkah Light by Sheldon Oberman (Picture book, Grades 1-4)

December 14th is Hanukkah! Also called the “festival of lights” Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for 8 days around the world.  During this holiday, a menorah is lit for 8 days, special prayers are said, and traditional foods are served.  To learn more about this holiday, talk to friends or borrow a book from the library to learn more.

 

Sweet Valley Twins: Best Friends by Francine Pascal (Graphic Novel, Grades 3-7)

December 18th is National Twin Day! This day is dedicated to appreciating your twin and spending time with them.  You can see a movie, read books, or go on a bike ride!

 

The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s First Winter by Eric Carle. (Board book, Grades PreK)

December 21st is the Winter Solstice! BRRRRRR it’s cold here!  Winter has arrived and what better way to celebrate the new season than with a great book!  Read all about winter and all the cool activities you can participate in this winter!

December 25th is Christmas! Christmas is a holiday celebrated all over the world.  Whether it’s decorating the house with bright lights and tinsel or a big green tree with ornaments and garland.  Christmas is a time to gather and be with family and eat tons and tons of food!

 

Kwanzaa Fun by Linda Robertson (Picture book, Grades 3-4)

December 26th is Kwanzaa! Kwanzaa is celebrated as a time for families and friends to come together to remember the past and celebrate African American culture.  To learn more about this holiday, talk to family and friends or borrow a book from the library to learn more about Kwanzaa.

 

What’s for breakfast? by Stephani Stilwell (Picture book, Grades PreK-1)

December 30th is National Bacon Day! Celebrate bacon in your own way.  Get creative and think of all the cool foods you can make with bacon.  This day is dedicated to show the different ways bacon can be used in meals.  Bacon is bigger than breakfast, so get those ideas rolling and think of all the tasty foods you can make!

 

Calendar Mysteries: New Year’s Eve thieves by Ron Roy (Fiction, Grades 1-4)

December 31st is New Year’s Eve! Bring in the new year with a new book!  This day is dedicated to saying goodbye to the past year and making new goals for the year ahead.
